Unorthodox Musical Behavior

Unorthodox Musical Behavior is an international project that demonstrates the power of music to bridge language, culture and geography.

Anchored by pianist/composer Paolo Tognola (also of ZTB), this is a free jazz quartet including bassist Carlo Cimino, guitarist Yuta Star and percussionist Takenori Saeki.

Paolo is a trained jazz pianist from Brescia, Italy whose recordings are on Antenna Non Grata, Stick Head and Right Brain Records. Yuta was born in Ehaime, Japan, and is currently active in music scenes throughout his native country. Carlo, of Consenza, Italy, actively performs and records in Italy and abroad. He teaches jazz and co-founded the Manitù label. Takenori hails from Gifu, Japan and now lives in Tokyo, where he performs regularly. The four musicians share a fascination with improvised and avant-garde music. They met through the International Collective of Free Jazz and Free Improvisation, and began sharing ideas.

This unique collaboration across nearly 10,000 km—parts were recorded in Italy and Japan—resulted in the quartet’s first album. It’s a freeform explosion of musical textures and motifs. All four musicians add unique voices that reflect their farflung personal influences.
