Earshot on Spontanea

Earshot Magazine, a publication of Earshot Jazz, has a new review of Quintaphonic, the latest album by Right Brain Records artist Spontanea. They’ve also separately, and more recently, published a review of the 2020 companion Spontanea album, Chromasonic.

Ian Gwin writes that “the quintet’s collective searching, charged with the taut motion of uncertainty, could not have been more timely.”

Ian’s eloquent writing deserves a bigger quote than that, so here’s another excerpt:

“For the remarkable last track “Quintaria,” the group follows through a delicately drifting, uneasy mood, faint as semi-darkness before day’s end: as a broad cello melody slowly glistens, odd sounds set in like shapes in the dusk. It’s only from a long-sustained and developed intimacy that the quintet can summon, so gradually and carefully, the diffused gestures of this lasting instant, to show time coherent by its dispersal. Here, as in the natural world, the conditions and relationships that make this perception possible are a precious epiphany.”

Haley Freedland writes of Chromasonic: “Each of the seven tracks offers a different aural palette, and the can feel the hard reset as they transition from one track to the next; much like strolling through the open doors to an art museum and never ending your observations.”
